Ask not…

Fifty years ago, on January 20th, 1961, John F. Kennedy announced that  “the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans.” You can read the the press release of the Inaugural Address (“AS ACTUALLY DELIVERED“) as part of the digital archives of the John F. Vintage postcards on display

In my quest for hidden treasures amongst the special collections at the Library, I discovered a cache of vintage post cards. By narrowing the subjects depicted to Lenox areas of interest, I gathered 84(!) for display in the the glass case just outside the Special Collections Room. [There were even more, but I ran out [...]

“Do make me a Consulting Art something or other…”

In the 1949 Librarian’s Report for the Lenox Library Association, Irene Poirier announced the acquisition of an ‘Illustrator’s Library,’ the gift of noted children’s illustrator Elizabeth MacKinstry (1879–1956), who spent her last years in Lenox. MacKinstry’s “tiny collection” of rare illustrated books, an array spanning two centuries, became one of the most significant collections in [...]

Trees in living color

So…you’ve seen our Sepia Trees exhibit, and the stroll down Memory Lane inspires you to take a new stroll of your own. Or, perhaps you’ve recently read The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost and are in need of a yellow wood of your own. Whatever your motivation, this is the time of year to [...]

Sepia Trees

Just in time for the fall foliage, the Reference Department has a photo exhibit titled “Sepia Trees,” on display in the tall glass case outside our Special Collections Room. The case is filled with photos of Lenox ca.1880-1910 (or thereabouts – I think the Tanglewood pines photo is from the 1940s), before the advent of [...]

New Dome Room Display

We’ve been moving some furniture in the library, to make room for a Louis XIV style biblioteque, ormolu mounted with ebony inlaid walnut. The Dome Room is the only place fitting for such a grand antique. It was donated to the library by Jim Chervenak. While pulling out a box from our Fanny Kemble collection, [...]

Soldiers of U.S. Army Europe’s 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team will march through Moscow’s Red Square in Russia’s 65th Victory Day parade on May 9. The event marks the first time a serving, active-duty U.S. Army unit, carrying the American flag and representing the United States, will march in the parade.   What does this [...]

From the Western MA Regional Library System (WMRLS) website and WMRLS blog: “On Friday, March 05, 2010, the 12th Annual Berkshire Library Legislative Breakfast was held at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Fifty-seven trustees, librarians, and friends from all over Berkshire County took the opportunity to express their support of libraries and their concerns [...]

Indigenous instruments on display at the Lenox Library

On display… Indigenous instruments from around the world (but mostly from Africa). These instruments were collected by Phyllis and Walter Loeb, who generously donated the instruments to the Lenox Library this fall. Mangbetu harps with carved heads, gourd rattles and sistrums, monkey drums and a thumb piano are included in this display. The creativity in [...]
