In addition to the reestablishment of Ancestry.com at the Library, we have also purchased an online subscription to the Historic Boston Globe 1872-1979. Even better, our licensing agreement for this database allows us to provide remote access for those who possess a Lenox Library card.

Examples of local interest to be found include news of the Berkshire Symphonic Festival and Music Inn, Gilded Age happenings, and the occasional controversy such as the attempt to build a state prison at the current Kripalu site.

Did you know that in 1945, Lenox put in a bid for the building of the United Nations Headquarters? The application, penned by the Lenox Board of Selectmen, invited the new organization “to the lovely little New England community so aptly called the “Gem of the Hills.”

Shortly after cancelling last year’s Lenox Library subscription (due to lack of use), I learned that the Conte Archives was closing. In one week, five library patrons came in to express their relief that we had Ancestry, since they were losing their connection at the Conte.

I have reinstated the library’s subscription. Due to the licensing agreement with ProQuest, we can not offer home access, but I would love to see this resource get some use. So come on in and find your ancestors. It’s great fun!

Also worth checking out is a new multimedia website http://www.JFK50.org created to “invite young visitors to explore the legacy of JFK through the core themes of public service, science and innovation, civil rights, domestic affairs, the arts, foreign policy and diplomacy and the environment,” according to the news release provided by the JFK Library Foundation.

[Full disclosure here: I chose "ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country" as my quote in the 1983 LMHS yearbook.]

In my quest for hidden treasures amongst the special collections at the Library, I discovered a cache of vintage post cards. By narrowing the subjects depicted to Lenox areas of interest, I gathered 84(!) for display in the the glass case just outside the Special Collections Room.

[There were even more, but I ran out of room in the case.]

Also on display in the Dome Room is a collection of vintage Christmas postcards, most with postmarks dating to just before World War I. I was struck by the use of robin’s egg blue and pink tints, as well as the depiction of roses and forget-me-nots. Funny how fashions can change, even in the greeting card industry!
