SUMMARY:Hutch and Cap: The First Two Fire Chiefs
DESCRIPTION:**NOTE: Change of Venue** \nChiefs Oscar “Hutch” Hutchinson and Edward “Cap” Conklin led the Lenox Fire Department for the first 71 years of its inception. Each brought common sense and ingenuity in equal measure to their role. Both were in military service: Hutch as a Captain in the Massachusetts State Guard and Cap as a WWII Lieutenant with a Purple Heart. \nJoin Local History Librarian Amy Lafave at Lenox’s new Public Safety Complex (227 Housatonic Street) as she tells the story of these two intrepid men. The calamitous fire of the morning of Easter Sunday 1909\, which spurred the creation of the department\, also will be covered. \nThe presentation will be held in the Community Room off the lobby entrance of the facility\, and will last about 45 minutes\, with time for questions and reminiscences to follow. \nWe are pleased to be a part of the Open House for the Public Safety Complex. The event will be held from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.\, beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Vintage and modern public safety equipment will be on display\, with opportunities to tour the new building. \nThere will be no parking at the Complex\, but you may park at LMMHS and take the provided shuttle.

SUMMARY:The Jazz Barn by John Gennari Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Lenox Library is pleased to launch the latest release by John Gennari\, Professor of English and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of Vermont. \nThe Jazz Barn: Music Inn\, the Berkshires\, and the Place of Jazz in American Life tells the story of what happened in the 1950s in a barn\, an icehouse\, and a greenhouse in the verdant Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. Gennari explores how Lenox\, a predominantly white New England town became a haven for African American musicians\, and reveals the Berkshires as an important incubator not just of American literature and classical music but also of the Modern Jazz Quartet and Ornette Coleman’s “new thing.” \nIllustrations for the book include iconic photos by Clemens Kalischer (1921-2018)\, whose works will be on exhibit in the Welles Gallery. \nBooks will be available for purchase at the launch.
