DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, June 24\, 2026\, 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. for our Kickoff Event! \nThis year’s theme is “Plant a seed\, read!” Youth ages 0-17 can participate in this program. \nPick up a folder for Summer Reading and receive: \n\nYour first tracker sheet\nGiveaway prizes\nEvents calendar and flyers\nA ticket for one FREE Hawaiian ice from Kona Ice (their truck will be parked behind the Library from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.)\nA craft to add to our “Garden of Good Intentions”\n\nCan’t make the kickoff? No problem! Pick up a folder any time after this event during regular Library hours.  \nHow Summer Reading works:  \n\nUse a tracker sheet to record how much you read.*\n\n\nColor in one bubble on your tracker sheet for every 10 minutes that you read or someone reads to you. Read printed books (including graphic novels!) or ebooks\, or listen to audiobooks or playaways. They all count!\n\n\nWhen you fill up a tracker sheet\, bring it back to Lenox Library to receive a free book and one “Chance to Win” ticket. (You’ll place your “Chance to Win” ticket into the container for the prize you would like to try to win). You also will get another tracker sheet.\n\n\nThe first tracker sheet you turn in also earns you an ice cream gift card!\n\n\nAfter the End of Summer Reading Party\, we will pull one ticket from each container and award that prize to a lucky winner. SUMMARY:Poetry Party
DESCRIPTION:We will kick off our Youth Poetry Contest on World Poetry Day with food\, games\, crafts\, and a reading and workshop with Kateri Kosek. Kateri will briefly read from her book The Forest Revealed\, which poetically illuminates the feats and fragilities of the flora\, fauna\, and everything in between that calls the Northern forest home. Twelve large watercolor paintings by Maine artist Jada Fitch take viewers month by month\, tree by tree through life in the forest\, making the book a delight for all ages. \nThen\, by using the natural world as inspiration\, participants will use a step-by-step writing prompt to compose their own epistolary (letter) poems to a creature of their choosing. \nYouth Poetry Contest Theme: What Brings You Joy? \nAccepting submissions March 21 – April 18\, 2026. Youth in grades 3 – 12 eligible to enter. Three age categories. First place winners will earn a prize! Contest guidelines and submission form coming soon. Winners will be announced April 25\, 2026 at our Poetry Celebration! \nSupport for this program is generously provided by Beth and Peter Levin.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 7\, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.\, join us for a special screening of INDEPENDENT LENS’ The Librarians\, the award-winning documentary that The New York Times called “gripping…as well-crafted as it is profoundly alarming.”  This event will take place in the Lenox Town Hall Auditorium\, 6 Walker Street. \nWhen Texas lawmakers seek to review a list of books\, librarians find themselves on the frontlines of a national battle. Across the U.S.\, librarians face the impact of uniting against library collection standards that include restrictions on race-related and LGBTQIA+ content. Drawing on historical context\, The Librarians explores the broader implications for education and public life.  A panel discussion and audience Q&A will follow the screening\, and our friends from The Bookstore will sell a variety of banned books.\n \nPanelists: \nMartin Garnar (he/him) is the director of the Amherst College Library and the editor of the Intellectual Freedom Manual (10th ed.)\, the authoritative reference for librarians for day-to-day guidance on maintaining free and equal access to information for all people. His professional activities and speaking schedule reflect a profound inability to say no. A native New Yorker\, Martin lives in western Massachusetts with his husband Mark and their impossibly cute miniature dachshunds. \nJennifer Guerin (she/her) earned her M.A. in English from Georgetown University and her Master of Library and Information Science from the University of North Texas. She also received her Law for Librarians training from the American Library Association in May 2024 and tries her level best to keep up with Intellectual Freedom issues for the Massachusetts School Library Association.  Jennifer currently serves as Librarian at W.E.B. Du Bois Regional Middle School in Great Barrington\, MA\, where a custodian’s complaint against Maia Kobabe’s Gender Queer in a teacher’s classroom made national headlines in 2024. \nColleen AF Venable (she/her/they) is the author of the National Book Award Longlisted Kiss Number 8\, a graphic novel co-created with Ellen T. Crenshaw that has been banned in 11 states. Her other books include the Katie the Catsitter series with Stephanie Yue (banned in Florida and Tennessee)\, Mervin the Sloth is About to Do the Best Thing in The World with Ruth Chan\, The Oboe Goes Boom Boom Boom with Lian Cho\, and the Guinea Pig\, Pet Shop Private Eye series\, also with Stephanie Yue and nominated for the Best Publication for Kids Eisner. Colleen is also the graphic novel adapter of the Junie B. Jones series\, which has lived on the banned list for the last 30+ years. \nColleen is one of the national leaders of Authors Against Book Bans\, a coalition of writers\, illustrators\, anthology editors and contributors\, and other book creators\, who stand united against the deeply unconstitutional movement to limit the freedom to read. Prior to becoming a full-time writer\, she was the sole designer for hundreds of First Second Books\, worked as a Creative Director for Workman and Macmillan\, and the Director for Epic! Kids. DESCRIPTION:The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office and Berkshire County Kids Place have partnered to launch cyber safety programming in Berkshire County. Research shows that children are exposed to content and pressures online far earlier than caregivers realize. Children are not only faced with navigating online situations\, but they also hear about them from friends and peers. \nMiddle school-aged youth are invited to participate in one 60-minute session to learn about safe online behavior\, conducted by Berkshire County Kids Place staff utilizing the NetSmartz Curriculum. A separate activity will be provided for parents/caregivers for the duration of the program. \nNo registration required.
