Hutch and Cap: The First Two Fire Chiefs

**NOTE: Change of Venue**

Chiefs Oscar “Hutch” Hutchinson and Edward “Cap” Conklin led the Lenox Fire Department for the first 71 years of its inception. Each brought common sense and ingenuity in equal measure to their role. Both were in military service: Hutch as a Captain in the Massachusetts State Guard and Cap as a WWII Lieutenant with a Purple Heart.

Join Local History Librarian Amy Lafave at Lenox’s new Public Safety Complex (227 Housatonic Street) as she tells the story of these two intrepid men. The calamitous fire of the morning of Easter Sunday 1909, which spurred the creation of the department, also will be covered.

The presentation will be held in the Community Room off the lobby entrance of the facility, and will last about 45 minutes, with time for questions and reminiscences to follow.

We are pleased to be a part of the Open House for the Public Safety Complex. The event will be held from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Vintage and modern public safety equipment will be on display, with opportunities to tour the new building.

There will be no parking at the Complex, but you may park at LMMHS and take the provided shuttle.
