We are pleased to continue our Distinguished Lecture Series, now in its 17th season. On Sunday, October 15, 2023 at 4:00 p.m., Annette Guertin, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Berkshire Community College, will discuss “Are You Afraid of Math? Math Anxiety and Ways to Overcome It.”

Math can be scary for many people.  Annette Guertin will explore the topic of math anxiety, looking at ways to address it on a daily basis.  How can breathing, writing, and counting be helpful?  What New England connections to math research will we discover?  Audience members will be invited to participate in this interactive presentation.  A resource list also will be provided.

For 41 years, Annette Guertin taught courses ranging from Elementary Algebra to Math of Art and Nature at Berkshire Community College. With the philosophy that math is everywhere — in nature, in the arts, in the sciences, in the mundane, and in the extraordinary — Guertin taught math “as a way of thinking that ties everything else in life together,” said BCC President Ellen Kennedy. Known as a collaborator, Guertin often teamed up with colleagues and students alike. She researched and implemented biofeedback methods that helped students far beyond the math classroom, tackling the common fear of math head-on.

Now in its 17th season, the Distinguished Lecture Series is organized and hosted by Dr. Jeremy Yudkin. Dr. Yudkin is a resident of the Berkshires and Professor of Music and Co-Director of the Center for Beethoven Research at Boston University. Every summer at the Lenox Library he presents the pre-concert lectures for the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood season.

All programs in the Distinguished Lecture Series are free and open to the public.
